Cull The Clutter

Deborah Campbell Atelier www.deborahcampbellatelier.com

Happy New Year all! Are you in need of a wardrobe cull? I know I am. Over the years I have spent a small fortune on what I now refer to as 'stuff', because apart from some precious items, well worn, the majority is left to gather dust.  I have questioned many times why I have all this stuff? I will never wear half of the clothes and most certainly cannot walk in the majority of the shoes. So why did I part with my hard earned cash?  Simple, I thought it would make me happy. And for a fleeting moment it did, and I was addicted to that fleeting rush of happiness.  However for the duration owning 'the stuff' has been like a lead weight cluttering my existence.  Excessive consumerism plagued me at every turn, pushing me to question what it was I needed to fix. Regular readers of this blog know I have preached about buying less, buying better, rather than more. And Since January 2012 I changed my consumer habits forever by challenging myself to buy better by buying nothing new for a year. With the exception of a few charity shop fixes I succeeded and now shopping consciously means I consider all purchases by checking in with my validity radar.

1. Do I love it?
2. Will I wear it time after time?
3. Where is it made and what is it made of?
4. Do I really need it?
5. Can I afford it?

However that lead weight around my neck - my cluttered life of 'stuff' does need tackling. Culling my wardrobe is my mission for 2015. A mission I failed miserably at in the past, which is why I need help, and hope to find in James Wallman's book Stuffocation: Living More With Less. Released on 15th January 2015.

In this groundbreaking book, trend forecaster James Wallman reveals the world's growing sense of Stuffocation - and how we can move away from it
'Like The Tipping Point meets Freakonomics - but with a huge idea at its heart' Sunday Times
We have more stuff than we could ever need - clothes we don't wear, kit we don't use, and toys we don't play with.
But having everything we thought we wanted isn't making us happier. It's bad for the planet. It's cluttering up our homes. It's making us feel 'stuffocated' and stressed - and it might even be killing us.
